Workshop in progress

Ultimate Law Guide is built on testimonials. Helping people to see the opportunities open to them, and providing a helping hand in their career progression.

Our training conferences are hugely successful and extremely well-received by law students and trainee lawyers. Our feedback has consistently been outstanding. Please see the comments below for a further insight into the quality of our offering.

“Going to Ultimate Law Guide’s workshops was the best decision of my career. I recently secured a training contract with a great firm. The quality of my application and my performance on the assessment day would not have been possible without the preparation Ultimate Law Guide’s gave me. I spoke with Craig on many occasions and he has played a large part in my success.

I am really grateful for the one-on-one advice and workshops. Many talented students struggle to find training contracts and I certainly struggled. I found receiving constant rejections without feedback to be highly demotivating and I was at a personal low before Craig's talks. His personal story is inspiring and uplifting, involving many setbacks and great personal tenacity. He has walked the path that your students currently tread and is able to offer empathy. Comparing experiences with Craig was refreshingly candid and humorous.  My experience was that Craig differentiated himself by his professional ability to advance issues and give focused advice to help develop detailed strategies for success.

The assessment day that I was successful at was also my first. I was able to take advantage of this opportunity so effectively because of Craig Robinson's Assessment Day talk. I was well prepared and confident. From having run the gauntlet himself, both successfully and unsuccessfully, he was able to give me a clear picture of what I needed to achieve in the group exercises and what I needed to say at the interview. I hope that you will continue to give your students the opportunity to benefit from Craig's advice. Craig's career advice offered something unique that added value to my time at law school”.

Chris Caroll, Trainee Solicitor at a national law firm

“I attended Craig's workshops for future trainee solicitors and found his insight and advice very useful. There is already a wealth of guidance and information out there relating to commercial and legal awareness; in contrast, what I found most engaging about Craig's workshops is that they focused on practical skills for working in the professional environment of a law firm rather than theoretical knowledge about law and business. As an example, I have made good use of Craig's recommendations for building professional relationships, managing my workloads and prioritising different tasks. Some of the ideas he offered were new to me as someone fresh out of university and certainly helped when I began working”.

Trainee Solicitor at Clifford Chance LLP

“I went on to secure a training contract with Olswang after attending Craig’s commercial awareness workshops. The workshops were fun, well-presented and extremely helpful, and, in fact, the greatest seminars I have ever attended. The workshops were extremely useful in addressing how important commercial awareness is to firms and their clients, and how vital it is for candidates to clue themselves up on commercial issues for the purpose of interviews. Secondly, speaking to Craig and his team after the workshop, it was refreshing to hear from people who had been through the process themselves and who could truly relate to the challenges I was going through. I kept in touch and they have been at hand ever since, offering nuggets of wisdom and supportive words. The quest for a contract does not have to be a lonely pursuit!”

Ilan, Trainee Solicitor at Olswang

“Craig's presentations give a brilliant and up to date insight into the skills required to secure a training contract and the techniques needed to give off the air of confidence necessary throughout the application process and whilst working as a trainee.”  Peter Highmore, Trainee Solicitor, Linklaters

“Craig Robinson’s programme of workshops made a huge contribution to my training contract success and I cannot recommend them highly enough. Before attending Craig’s workshops, I applied for ten training contracts and was unsuccessful at the first stage of the application process for all of them. By the end of Craig’s first session I had realised why my previous applications were so weak.

The workshops emphasised the importance of commercial awareness, both to application forms and to practicing as a lawyer in any area. I feel that I now have a far better understanding of law firm’s as businesses and the threats and opportunities faced by firms in the current economic climate. As well as being an informative and engaging speaker, Craig was also able to respond to specific questions from the audience regarding strategies for targeting different practice areas and to give personalised advice based on our individual situations.

Additionally, the materials Craig provided were very useful and helped me to produce targeted applications that clearly demonstrated my skills and matched them to the area of law I was applying for. Attending Craig’s workshops really transformed my application forms. The first application I completed following these workshops was successful and I begin my training contract in 2014”.

Davida Baker, Training Contract with Irwin Mitchell

“I attended Craig’s conference. Before Craig's talk, the words 'commercial awareness' terrified me, and I had never found anyone who could give a clear explanation of exactly what this term meant. However, I left your afternoon talk not only feeling able to comfortably understand what the term meant but also excited at being able to have a new and important area of my personal skills to talk about with potential employers. The tips and hints that you gave really helped and inspired me so I just wanted to express my thanks to you. Since your workshop, I have bought your book and received one to one mentoring from Craig. This has helped me to secure an internship with PwC Legal, I want to let you know that the experience was absolutely superb. Also, Craig provided valuable career advice. In the refreshment break after your talk I realised that a lot of people shared my opinion and were truly enlightened by what you had to say”.

Chris Arvat, Associate at PwC

“I attended Craig's workshop for future trainee solicitors. As a law student, I was aware of the types of legal work we would be doing but I was not very aware of what it would be like on a day to day basis in the firm. The workshops helped give me an insight into what I could expect and what I should look out for and be aware of. The biggest insight was how important relationship management is as part of the job. While this might be obvious to a degree, discussing it with real life examples really brought home the things I should think about and do when I start my training contract. The workshops offered practical advice and guidance which I learned a lot from and appreciated. While the Internet and other materials offer good information, hearing it from someone who has done it and being able to ask questions definitely cleared any worries and gave me a deep enough insight to start my career with confidence. I look forward to putting his insights and guidance into practical use”.

Daniel Steele, Trainee Solicitor at Clifford Chance LLP

“The conference has been extremely useful and inspirational. It is amazing how Ultimate Law Guide have managed to get over 15 Ultimate Lawyers in, who are all genuinely really willing to provide amazing insight. This is valuable to all of us, particularly for me as a paralegal currently working at the Bank of England, and continuing to work hard to secure a training contract. Speaking to many of the attendees, I can confirm that the conference has been extremely helpful for us all, and I will definitely be attending future events”.

Shoab Hussein, Bank of England

Last summer I went along to the 'Developing into Ultimate Lawyers Conference'. I found the event interesting and well organised with a good mix of academic opinion (Richard Susskind on the future of law firms and skills needed to survive and make strategic career decisions) and also career advice and personal anecdotes from lawyers at all stages of their careers from first year Trainees at top law firms to the more established, including those who had gone In House. The speakers were clear, high achieving, honest and motivating. The whole event was upbeat, informative and enjoyable. I also made useful contacts with lawyers in the firms I was targeting in my applications.

Also, I made a lot of notes; I believe those notes and the ideas triggered throughout the event gave me an edge at the interview stage...and also a welcome break from revising. That summer I had a few interviews and assessment days, and was fortunate to succeed in a securing a contract at the firm I really wanted. I honestly believe that the ideas and insights I was exposed to during the conference combined with all those notes to reread later played a part in this in this outcome, helping me to differentiate my application and come across as a proactive candidate that puts the research in. Thanks for helping me! And long may you continue.

Tess Lewin, training contract with national law firm

“The Ultimate Law Guide conference has been a great today, and it has been absolutely fantastic listening to the speakers share a whole spectrum of views on what it takes to succeed in a legal career. From trainees, to qualified solicitors, partners and in house lawyers offering their perspective and insight. The highlights of the day for me was listening to Professor Richard Susskind’s speech on the impact of changes in technology is having in the delivery of legal services, and what we as tomorrow’s Ultimate Lawyers can do to maximise the opportunities in the rapidly changing legal market. I would certainly recommend the ‘Developing into Ultimate Lawyers Conference”. Gary Llewellan

“I attended the Ultimate Law Career Guide on 11th July 2014. The event was well attended and featured a range of speakers that were selected to inform students, trainees and junior lawyers of what it takes to be an ultimate lawyer. I found the speakers very knowledgeable in their area of expertise. The modules on commercial awareness and, IT and the law were particularly informative. The range of lawyers speaking at the event came from private practice and in-house. The speakers' experience ranged from trainees to 10 - 20 years PQE.  All of the speakers provided helpful tips on how to become an ultimate lawyer. I found the event very useful; it has given me the tools to progress my career - now I need to use them”. Paul Gordon

“I found attending the Ultimate Law Guide conference very useful experience. It has been really great to hear about the perspectives of trainees, lawyers at every single level of the legal profession, as well as all of the other career opportunities available to us, such as life as an in house lawyer. And what those at uni and law school need to be doing to succeed. It has been an eye-opening experience for me personally, and I have gained a lot from it”.

Marc Lasok-Smith

There have been some really useful things said that I have noted and will definitely take away and apply I legal career to make myself stand out. There were also some really great people speaking at the conference”. Katerina Taylor

“I first got in contact with Craig Robinson in July 2012 while preparing for a Training Contract interview at a top 20 City law firm. While the rest of the country was basking in Olympic glory, I was feeling decidedly gloomy about my career prospects]It had taken me so long to make any inroads into the legal profession, that I felt that it was only a matter of time before I was awarded a degree in History. I was advised to read the 'Ultimate Guide to Training Contract Success' on a tutor's advice. This provided me with the inspiration and encouragement that I so desperately needed to continue with my interview preparation. It was engaging, comprehensive, informative and wonderfully witty. Indeed, it didn't talk about the dreaded 'commercial awareness' in almost mythical and impenetrable terms, but instead gave countless examples of how best to illustrate this vital skill. I decided to write to Craig Robinson to commend him on what I considered to be the 'holy grail' of legal graduate recruitment literature, and to ask if he would kindly share any further insights. Not only did Craig reply promptly, but he elaborated on the themes in the book, and significantly, enabled me to realise how these could best be applied to my own experiences. This gave me an enormous amount of confidence going into the interview. Very recently, I had another interview for a position at a top 10 law firm, and enlisted Craig to give me some one-to-one coaching. He was especially good at helping me ensure that I kept my answers focused and succinct. I managed to secure the position at the firm, which might not have been possible without Craig Robinson's assistance”.

Jacqui Rhule-Dagher, Hogan Lovells

“Thank you for giving your time to talk at the College of Law yesterday evening.  It was genuinely the most useful careers talk I have been to.  I now have areas of my approach which I can and will improve. I was also pleased to see on your website that Luke Murphy is involved with Ultimate Law Guide, I saw him talk at a Junior Lawyers Division event at the Law Society earlier this year, he was very good. I wish you the best of luck with all aspects of Ultimate Law Guide in the future.  I always refer to the book when making applications”.
Henry Jones, LPC student at the College of Law

“I came to your talk earlier this evening at the college of law and I just wanted to thank you for it. I found it really motivating, and having felt the feelings that you were describing- after rejections, and like things are stalling, I really feel a renewed sense of vigour and passion to succeed now. It was so refreshing to see that you had made your own success through hard work and ingenuity and that I can do that too! I left with a lot to think about and feel much more positive. So thank you very much for inspiring me! I just wanted to let you know, I followed your advice, changed the tone of the emails I was sending out, redrafted my CV and it worked! I have got some work experience lined up, starting tomorrow. So just wanted to say thanks for your advice!”
Charlotte Evans

“I was at your talk today concerning building confidence in commercial awareness at the University of Law. It completely changed my perception of a legal career in the city & made me think it was possible! Your tips are much appreciated”.  Jonathan Pearson

“I had the pleasure of attending your commercial awareness workshop at the Citylaw Live event on Saturday. I found this very informative, interesting and above all, inspirational. Thank you for taking your time to deliver the workshop and share some of your stories! I am emailing as a further enquiry into training contract applications. I am looking to apply primarily to larger regional firms, particularly in the Guildford area. Does the same approach required for City firms apply to the smaller firms that operate just out of the city? The firms I am looking at require an online application similar to those of the City firms. Thank for any help and thank you again for your extremely helpful and insightful workshop”. Alicia Smith

“Let me thank you for taking time to deliver such a well packaged and thoughtfully presented seminar on commercial awareness. I left energised and motivated. Unlike other sessions that I have attended yours was inspiring and helpful. I am currently in my final year of the BPTC programme. Nonetheless I am glad that I attended as it was very pertinent and relevant to my understanding and preparation. I particularly like the 5 A's of Commercial Awareness”.
 Kevin Gordon

“Thank you for such a great talk and answering my questions.  I felt very inspired and even more motivated. The talk made me aware of things that I didn't really consider before and it has been very insightful as to how to go about applying myself to secure a training contract through being commercially aware and being able to express that, whether it is in the CV, application forms or at the actual interviews.  I am definitely going to check out your book because it is really reassuring to know that someone else has been there before you and has the experience and knowledge of becoming a lawyer.  Sometimes you talk to people and all you hear is how competitive it is to be a lawyer and it can be intimidating, but hearing what you were saying and what you have been through, I could relate and it has inspired me even more to stay on the path I have chosen. I appreciate your time and help”.

Milena Assenova

“I just wanted to email you to say how useful I found the talk given by Craig Robinson on 'Showcasing Commercial Awareness at Interviews'. He was an excellent speaker and was able to offer first hand insights which were very applicable to me as an LPC student. I found it particularly helpful that the structure of the talk was flexible, allowing us to ask about our individual concerns. It was also very good that the answers he gave were based on his own recent experiences in the application process. Thanks very much”. Nick Polley

“I attended your amazing and eye-opening workshop last week. Thank you”. Najeeb Kakar – LPC student
